Rising Stars | This cohort of student athletes are “talent identified” from our community program, Changing the Game. Each week, they visit the center for tennis instruction with their “team” plus classroom activities (life skills), and a healthy meal. On Sundays, two students from each school, the “rising stars” have the additional opportunity for private and semi-private lessons. This same group benefits from being the primary focus of Achievement Coach, Josh Irving, who co-develops with them, and their guardians, Individual Achievement plans that cover academic, health and wellness, service learning and tennis goals. |
Changing the Game | Changing the Game is Legacy’s signature community youth development program that provides Philadelphia communities free after school and low-cost summer programs that promote health, wellness, grit, resilience and individual achievement while offering regular family engagement. Students participate in free after school programming at their school and in their community park (as weather permits). From this broad population, a “cohort” of approximately 12 students from each site is integrated into tennis clinics at Legacy on a weekly basis and also enjoy classroom activities (life skills), and a healthy meal. |
National Junior Tennis and Learning | The NJTL program provides seven weeks of tennis instruction, team and individual match play competition, life skills and mentorship, reading and reflective writing activities, information and lessons about Arthur Ashe’s historical life and legacy, a city-wide team and individual tennis tournament, a free t-shirt and the opportunity to compete in the USTA’s Arthur Ashe essay. |
