Programs - Changing The Game

Changing the Game is Legacy’s signature community youth development program that provides Philadelphia communities free after school and low-cost summer programs that promote health, wellness, grit, resilience and individual achievement while offering regular family engagement.

The in-depth program targets disadvantaged and highly impressionable middle-school children, who benefit from Legacy’s ability to provide culturally relevant coaches, a program-specific Achievement Coach, and a player pathway that integrates children into high-level tennis clinics at Legacy, one of only eight USTA Regional Training Center in the nation.

The program ranges from two days per week to five days per week during the school year and includes 5 days per week of summer camp.

In addition to the positive impact on participating student-athletes, Legacy’s Changing the Game program reaches student families and the greater community through Health and Family Nights that are hosted at the program site at least quarterly and feature: tennis instruction, tennis play, a healthy community meal, nutrition instruction and provision of healthy recipes, including a smoothie-demonstration and “create-your-own” smoothie station.

Long-term, Legacy desires that Changing the Game students move through middle school with a clear idea of positive pathways available to them through tennis and school, all while assuming a healthy lifestyle supported by positive nutrition and exercise choices. Ideally students will return to the program throughout elementary and middle school, choose to attend and be accepted to high schools that offer high rates of college enrollment, play high school tennis and/or individual tournaments, apply for first jobs as junior tennis instructors in Legacy’s Community Program Summer Camps, and volunteer with our Junior Leadership program as they move through their academic career.
