LEGACY provides a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment

Our Story

Through our programs, students can learn and practice achievement behaviors through our highly structured tennis, education, and character programs. By applying themselves to our programing, LEGACY kids demonstrate greater self-control, self-esteem, and self-awareness, preparing them for success.

LEGACY provides a safe, nurturing, and inclusive environment for more than 3500 kids annually. Today our free and low-cost programs lead to better health and education outcomes for kids. Our participants transform into athletes, model students, and active leaders in their schools, communities, and society.

Our History

The story of Legacy Youth Tennis & Education

Today, Legacy Youth Tennis and Education is one of the largest NJTL (now named National Junior Tennis and Learning) chapters in the nation, preparing youth for success, through its inclusive community, using tennis, education, and character programming throughout the city of Philadelphia, Camden, and Chester, in parks, schools, community centers, and at our flagship LEGACY Center in East Falls.
2023

For the first time, in partnership with the City of Philadelphia, LEGACY began delivering comprehensive Out of School Time Programs.

2019

Legacy Youth Tennis and Education was recognized by the United States Tennis Association as its National Junior Tennis and Learning chapter of the year; distinguishing it from among more than 500 community based tennis organizations in the nation.
2015

Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education became Legacy Youth Tennis and Education.
2012

The Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education Center located in East Falls was constructed as a state of the art facility dedicated to innovative youth tennis and education programming.
2006

Philadelphia Youth Tennis became Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis and Education — a leading 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
2003

These two organizations; the Philadelphia Tennis Patrons Association and the Philadelphia NJTL Chapter, co-founded by Chris and Leif Beck, came together to combine resources to better serve our youth.
1996

Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center opens up in Manayunk, Philadelphia.
1983

Chris Beck, (center) was a former nationally-ranked tennis player and an early NJTL leader. Along with her husband, Leif, founded an NJTL chapter in Philadephia in 1970—one of the very first NJTL programs in the country.
1970

William J. Clothier, II founded the Philadelphia Tennis Patrons Association. The organization’s goal was to provide financial assistance to the area’s aspiring and top-ranked players to offset the high cost of competing in regional and national tournaments.
